Indoor Photoshoot Ideas for a Rainy Day in Toronto

Rain in the forecast? Indoor and weather-proof options for a beautiful session in Toronto.

A rainy forecast is the number-one worry couples bring me before a session. It shouldn't be. Toronto weather is unpredictable, but a session day doesn't depend on blue skies — there are beautiful indoor and weather-proof options, and rain itself can make for striking images.

Here's how I think about a session when the forecast turns.

An at-home session

Your own home is one of the most underrated session locations. It's warm, private, and full of meaning — the light through a particular window, the corner where you actually spend your mornings. At-home sessions feel intimate and relaxed in a way no public location can match, and they're completely weather-proof. For couples, maternity, and newborn sessions especially, home works beautifully.

A studio session

A studio gives you full control: consistent light, no weather, no crowds, and a clean editorial backdrop. It suits portrait and personal branding sessions particularly well, and it's a calm, focused environment for maternity photos. If you want a polished, timeless look that doesn't depend on a location at all, a studio is the answer.

Covered architecture and public spaces

Toronto has striking covered spaces that stay dry — atriums, historic arcades, galleries, grand building lobbies, and covered market halls. These give you architectural depth and interesting light without open sky. Some require permission for photography, so we plan these in advance, but they can produce some of the most distinctive images of all.

Shooting in the rain on purpose

Sometimes the best move is to embrace it. Rain adds atmosphere — reflections on pavement, umbrellas, the soft grey light that flatters skin. A few intentional minutes in light rain, followed by warming up indoors, can produce the most memorable frames of a session. With the right clothing and a relaxed attitude, weather becomes a feature, not a problem.

How rescheduling works

If the forecast is genuinely severe — heavy storms, not just grey skies — rescheduling is always an option, and I keep that flexible. But for ordinary cloud and light rain, we usually shoot as planned. When you book, I talk you through the weather plan so there's never any stress on the day itself.
