One of the most common questions I hear before a maternity session is: what should I wear? It's a fair question — your body is changing, comfort matters, and you want to feel beautiful without feeling like you're trying too hard.
Here's what I've learned from styling dozens of maternity sessions across Toronto and the GTA: the best outfits aren't about trends. They're about fabric, fit, and how you feel when you put them on.
Flowy dresses are your best friend
A long, flowy dress in a neutral tone is the single most reliable choice for a maternity session. It moves beautifully in the wind, catches light in a cinematic way, and flatters every body shape.
Stick to neutral and earthy tones
Creams, taupes, sage, dusty rose, soft white, and warm browns photograph beautifully in natural light. They keep the focus on you and your belly rather than competing with the environment.
Form-fitting pieces work too
A fitted knit dress or a bodysuit with a long skirt can be stunning for maternity photos. The key is showing the silhouette without feeling restricted.
Bring 1–2 outfit options
I recommend bringing two looks to your session: one softer and more flowing, one slightly more fitted or editorial. This gives variety in the final gallery.
What about your partner?
If your partner is joining the session, I'd recommend coordinating without matching. Neutral tones that complement each other work best.
A few things to avoid
Very bright neon colours, small busy patterns, and heavy logos tend to distract in photos. And anything you wouldn't normally wear — if it feels like a costume, it will look like one.
When to schedule your session
The ideal window for a maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks. Your bump is visible and beautiful, but you're still comfortable enough to move, walk, and enjoy the session.
